PES 1 Integrated Solar Storage System

The Muswellbrook project utilises the PES 1 model solar storage system. PES1 is a truly complete AC output fully integrated solar storage system with excellent power characteristics that is reliable, flexible, scalable and suitable for a multitude of off-grid and on-grid applications, from remote communities to facilities with high power needs.

PES1 is the conclusion of many years of development work and full scale reference deployment data to find an optimal solution using readily available tried and tested technologies in one integrated system. The system is built around our professional supervisory control and data acquisition SCADA controls which are highly reliable and use smart algorithms to optimise performance and extend battery life.

The whole system is remote monitored and controlled with a manned control room and technical support 24 hours a day. The system uses top quality maintenance free Valve Regulated Lead Acid sealed batteries combining extreme current capacity, long design life, deep cycling and inherent reliability and safety.

Battery charging and AC power is delivered through tried and tested island and grid-tied inverters that supply high quality true sinewave, low THD power. PES1 is delivered in special tempered insulated 20 foot containers, pre-configured and tested and ready to install with minimum on-site works even in hard to reach locations.

 

The broadcast tower is powered by a 39 kWp solar power installation using 216 kWh of batteries and has a 8 kVA diesel back-up system for emergencies. The technology – 156 solar panels, 72 BAE batteries (supplied by R+J batteries), 3 SMA inverters and a monitoring system – is mostly Made in Germany.

Communication towers are a vital – not only for entertainment, but of course also in emergency situations – it is absolutely paramount that the tower is operational 24/7. The project designers made sure that the quality of the components and operations are at the highest possible level and can ensure an uptime of 100 per cent, with the backup generator and several safety elements playing a key role.
The positioning and mounting of the PV panels too was specifically designed and adapted to these special circumstances. To ensure that the tower is absolutely operational all year long, the panels are installed at a slightly higher slope than usual to maximise solar irradiation in the winter months.
The climate too presented a challenge for the project engineers. A significant range of temperature over the year puts a strain on the hybrid power system. The technology container, which houses the battery rack, is equipped with a smart combination of a freecooling unit and an active AC to guarantee an effective temperature control to extend the lifespan of the batteries. The monitoring and controlling system, using Domat technology and Photon Energy know-how, is continuously monitoring a large number of parameters.

The German government’s decision to switch off its nuclear power stations and instead focus on Renewable Energy lead to a boost in the development of solar energy technology in Germany. Up to date Germany has installed more than 35 GWp of Solar installations. Some federal countries already run largely on renewable energy. A large part of the system is designed to fit in a technology container, where the PV modules are connected to MorningStar TriStar TS-MPPT-60 solar controllers. The controllers charge three racks of BAE 10PVV1500 batteries.

The electricity from the batteries is converted using three SMA Sunny Island 6.0H inverters.

The data communication is provided using SMA Sunny Remote Control, Sunny Webbox, Sunny Sensorbox components and Domat control systems. The monitoring for the PV storage system is provided by Photon Energy.
